President Trump plans to announce 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum from all countries

On February 9, local time in the United States, US President Trump said that he would announce a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports on the 10th. Trump said the tariffs would apply to steel and aluminum imports from all countries. He did not disclose when the tariffs would take effect.

Since 2018, the United States has imposed an additional 25% tariff on imported steel from almost all countries and an additional 10% tariff on imported aluminum. Since then, the United States has negotiated an agreement to suspend tariff quotas on a certain amount of steel and aluminum products imported from the European Union, Japan and the United Kingdom.

As of February 8, 2020, tariffs have been extended to certain derivatives of steel and aluminum products. However, there are exceptions for steel derivatives from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Mexico and the United Kingdom, and aluminum derivatives from Argentina, Australia, Canada, the European Union, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Effective June 1, 2022, the United States will suspend Section 232 tariffs on steel imports from Ukraine, a suspension currently scheduled to last until June 1, 2025

Effective July 10, 2024, the United States imposes a 25% tariff on steel and steel-derived products imported from Mexico if the steel is melted and cast in a country other than the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

Also effective July 10, 2024, the United States imposes Section 232 tariffs on aluminum and aluminum-derived products imported from Mexico if the aluminum is primarily smelted, secondary smelted, or most recently cast in China, Russia, Belarus, or Iran. If these countries are China, Belarus, or Iran, the tariff is 10%; if they are Russia, the tariff is 200%. Exclusions may be granted if it is determined that a steel or aluminum product

(1) is not produced in the United States, is not produced in sufficient quantity, is of substandard quality

(2) should be excluded from Section 232 tariffs based on specific national security considerations.
